Preparing for Your Wedding Day Photography
Your wedding day will move quickly, and while I’ll be there to guide you through every step, a little thoughtful preparation can make a big difference in how your photos feel and how confidently you move through the day. My goal is always to create timeless, natural images that reflect you at your very best—without anything feeling forced or unfamiliar.
Below are a few helpful tips to keep in mind as you prepare.
A quick note on tanning
If you’re considering a spray tan or tanning beds before your wedding, I recommend proceeding with caution. These can sometimes photograph more orange than they appear in person, especially in certain lighting. For the most natural, timeless look, I suggest either skipping it or opting for a very light, well-tested application.
Hair & makeup for photography
Professional hair and makeup tend to photograph best when they enhance your natural features while still feeling like you. Makeup that is slightly more defined than your everyday look usually translates beautifully on camera and helps ensure your features stand out in both natural light and indoor settings.
For hair, styles that hold well throughout the day and allow for movement tend to photograph the most naturally. Soft texture, intentional structure, and styles that are secure without feeling stiff often create the most timeless results.
If your schedule allows, your hair and makeup trial can also be a wonderful opportunity to see your full bridal look photographed ahead of time—especially if paired with your engagement session. This gives you a chance to see everything in real lighting and make any small refinements before the wedding day.
Wardrobe & getting-ready details
Your getting-ready space plays a big role in your final gallery. Whenever possible, choose a room with plenty of natural light and a clean, uncluttered background. Simple details like moving bags, clutter, or extra items out of the main area can help your photos feel more elevated and timeless.
When selecting your getting-ready outfit, soft neutrals, white, champagne, or silk textures tend to photograph beautifully. Matching robes or coordinated bridal party outfits can also add a cohesive, elegant feel to your getting-ready images.
Helpful items to have on hand
A few small details can help your wedding day run more smoothly and give you peace of mind:
Comfortable backup shoes for moving between locations, portraits, or dancing
A second pair of earrings or accessories in case you want a different look later in the day
A touch-up kit with lipstick, powder, and any essentials for quick refreshes
A backup white dress or simple second outfit (especially helpful for if anything unexpected happens with your main dress, or if you get tired of wearing your gown during the reception and would prefer something more comfortable)
Steam or wrinkle plan for your dress so it photographs perfectly crisp and clean
Steam or wrinkle plan for your robe/ matching pajamas at the start of the day so your group photos with the girls look elegant
Clear timeline buffer so you never feel rushed during portraits or getting ready
These small preparations often make a big difference in keeping the day relaxed and enjoyable.
The most important thing
At the end of the day, the most timeless photographs come from you feeling comfortable, present, and fully yourself. When you’re able to slow down and enjoy the moment, it always shows—and those are the images you’ll treasure most.
