Madi & Joe's Michigan State University Engagement Session | East Lansing Engagement Photographer

There’s something extra special about engagement sessions that take place somewhere meaningful to a couple, and Madi and Joe’s engagement session at Michigan State University was exactly that. With two full hours to explore campus, an outfit change, and plenty of beautiful locations, their session felt relaxed, personal, and full of genuine moments.

As a Michigan engagement photographer, I always encourage couples to choose a location that reflects their story. For Madi and Joe, there was no better place than Michigan State University in East Lansing.

Why Michigan State University Is a Beautiful Engagement Session Location

Michigan State University offers some of the most picturesque engagement photo locations in Michigan. Between the historic architecture, tree-lined pathways, beautiful gardens, and iconic campus landmarks, there is no shortage of variety.

One of the biggest advantages of choosing MSU for engagement photos is how many different backdrops are available within walking distance. Throughout Madi and Joe’s session, we were able to capture a wide range of images that all felt unique while still telling one cohesive story.

A Two-Hour Engagement Session With an Outfit Change

Madi and Joe chose to extend their engagement session to two hours, which gave us the opportunity to explore more of campus and create a gallery with incredible variety.

Longer engagement sessions are perfect for couples who:

  • Want to visit multiple locations

  • Love having a larger gallery to choose from

  • Want a more relaxed experience without feeling rushed

  • Would like to incorporate an outfit change

For the first portion of their session, Madi and Joe opted for a classic, timeless look that photographed beautifully against the university’s historic architecture. Later, they changed outfits, creating an entirely different feel and allowing for even more variety throughout their gallery.

The outfit change helped showcase different sides of their personalities while giving their final collection a polished and editorial feel.

Capturing Their Story at Michigan State

What I loved most about photographing Madi and Joe was how naturally they interacted with one another. From quiet moments together while walking across campus to plenty of laughter throughout the evening, their connection made every photograph feel authentic.

Engagement sessions are about so much more than creating save-the-date photos. They provide an opportunity to slow down, spend intentional time together, and become comfortable in front of the camera before the wedding day arrives.

By the end of the session, Madi and Joe looked completely at ease, which will make their wedding photography experience even more enjoyable.

Benefits of Scheduling a Longer Engagement Session

Many couples ask whether they should choose a one-hour or two-hour engagement session. Madi and Joe’s session is a perfect example of why additional time can be valuable.

With a two-hour engagement session, couples can:

  • Explore multiple locations

  • Include one or more outfit changes

  • Capture a wider variety of images

  • Enjoy a more relaxed pace

  • Create a gallery that feels diverse and complete

For locations as expansive as Michigan State University, having extra time allows us to fully take advantage of everything the campus has to offer.
