Questions I Should Ask My Wedding Photographer

16 Must-Ask Questions Before Hiring Your Wedding Photographer

You're engaged (yay!) and diving into wedding planning. One of the biggest decisions you’ll make? Choosing the perfect wedding photographer to capture your day. You find one you love, you book a consultation… and now what?

Here are 16 essential questions to ask your wedding photographer before you sign the contract — so you can feel confident that your most treasured memories are in good hands.

1. Will you be our photographer on the wedding day?

Many photography studios employ multiple photographers — sometimes just a few, and in larger companies, over 100. That’s why it’s so important to know exactly who will be capturing your day before you book. Your connection with the photographer matters, because they’ll be by your side for most of your most cherished moments.

With me, you can rest assured: I will personally photograph your wedding. The only exception is if we mutually agree from the start that an associate team member will join your day — and even then, you’ll know exactly who to expect.

2. How many weddings have you photographed?

Experience makes all the difference. Over the past 15 years, I’ve had the honor of photographing more than 200 weddings, capturing each couple’s unique love story. A seasoned wedding photographer — typically one who has documented 50+ weddings — knows how to navigate challenging lighting, unexpected timelines, and powerful emotions, all while keeping your day flowing seamlessly. Extra insight comes when they’ve worked at your venue before, ensuring every moment is captured flawlessly.

3. Do you carry backup gear?

Tech issues happen — but they shouldn’t derail your wedding day. Ask if your photographer brings backup cameras, lenses, batteries, and memory cards. For example, I shoot with two professional mirrorless cameras, each with dual memory cards to instantly back up every photo. I also bring extra lenses, flashes, and more to cover every scenario.

4. What’s the typical turnaround time for our photos?

Most photographers deliver your gallery in 4–6 weeks. I personally aim for four. During peak wedding season, it may take a little longer — but your photographer should set clear expectations from the start.

5. Do you edit the photos yourself, and what’s your style?

Editing has a major impact on the final look and feel of your wedding photos. Always ask who will handle the editing and whether the finished images will reflect the style you saw on their website or Instagram.

I personally edit every photo I deliver. This ensures that your wedding images retain the true-to-life color, vibrance, and timeless style that drew you to my work, so your gallery is exactly what you envisioned.

6. How many images will we receive?

On average, couples receive 75–100 edited images per hour of coverage. So for an 8-hour wedding, you might expect 600–800 photos. Make sure to ask if there’s a cap or if the full gallery is included in your package.

7. How do you keep our images safe?

Your wedding photos are priceless — and they deserve top-notch protection. Ask how your photographer backs up your images during and after the wedding. I always shoot on dual memory cards, and then back everything up to multiple hard drives.

8. Can we request specific shots?

Have a dreamy photo in mind? Want a certain family member included in portraits? Most photographers are happy to accommodate special requests. Just communicate them in advance — ideally with a shot list.

9. Do you bring a second photographer or assistant?

Many wedding photography packages include a second photographer, which provides additional coverage — capturing both partners getting ready at the same time, multiple angles of the ceremony, and more candid moments throughout the day. Always ask who will be attending your wedding and what their role will be.

I typically recommend a second photographer for weddings with more than 250 guests or for celebrations with simultaneous events, such as a live band during cocktail hour while the bride and groom are having portraits taken. This ensures every meaningful moment is beautifully documented.

10. What’s the retainer fee and payment schedule?

Most photographers require a non-refundable retainer (typically 25%–50%) to secure your date. Be sure you know how much is due at booking, what’s due later, and when final payments are expected. My studio requires a 35% retainer with the remainder due 30 days prior to your wedding.

11. What’s your cancellation or refund policy?

Life is unpredictable. Ask what happens if you or the photographer needs to cancel. A clear contract will outline the terms and ensure everyone is protected.Your wedding day is too important to leave to chance. In the extremely unlikely situation that I cannot attend due to an emergency, a trusted professional from my network will step in. Every associate I work with adheres to my style and attention to detail, ensuring your memories are captured with the same care and elegance as if I were there personally.

12. What will you wear on our wedding day?

You want a photographer who blends in and looks professional. Most photographers wear comfortable, all-black attire that allows them to move freely while still looking polished. A black blouse with black slacks is my go-to outfit to make sure I’m ready to capture every moment.

13. What’s your demeanor like on a wedding day?

Your photographer should be calm, organized, friendly, and able to gently direct people when needed. Use the consultation to get a feel for their vibe, and read reviews to see how past couples describe their personality. My couples have described me as calm and reassuring. 14. Are guests allowed to take photos during your shots?

This is especially important if you have a relative or friend who loves to take photos. Some photographers prefer to be the sole shooter during key moments to avoid distractions, while others are more flexible. Always ask about a photographer’s approach to “guest photographers.”

Personally, I welcome guests capturing your day. I simply ask for enough space to move freely — forward, backward, and side-to-side — so I can document every moment seamlessly without interfering with your loved ones.

15. What’s your communication style leading up to and after the wedding?

Good communication is key. Ask how quickly they respond to emails or texts, how often you’ll check in before the wedding, and what to expect afterward. Clear communication = peace of mind.

Clear, timely communication is one of my top priorities. Leading up to your wedding, I respond promptly to emails and messages, and I check in regularly to ensure every detail is covered — from timelines to location guidance to any last-minute questions. After your wedding, I keep you updated on the editing and delivery process, so you always know when to expect your gallery. My goal is to provide peace of mind, so you can relax and enjoy your day knowing everything is handled.

16. Can we review your contract before booking?

You absolutely should ask to see the contract before committing. A professional photographer will have a thorough, transparent agreement that outlines all expectations and responsibilities on both sides.

Final Thoughts

Your wedding photographer is more than just a vendor — they’re the one preserving the story of your day. Don’t be afraid to ask questions, take notes, and trust your gut. The right photographer will happily guide you through the process and make sure you feel 100% confident and excited.
